Hello, Visionary Video Creators.
I’m settling nicely into life in New York City after spending the past year splitting my time between the U.S and overseas. You know how I am able to have location freedom, work from anywhere in the world and decide where in the world I want to land next? My online business based on YouTube! Video Marketing! I’ve used video in general and Youtube in particular to build multiple streams of mostly passive income where I can make money while I sleep. But every week I have people ask me whether Youtube is a waste of time or not. I get it. I wondered the same thing and now I have something I must say about it. My answer may shock you.
I think the question of whether to use YouTube as the main tool in your business is an important one. One of the most important decisions you will make as an online entrepreneur is what social media platform is best for your business. Since I am a video marketing expert, I have strong opinions about the power of YouTube (and other platforms like Facebook Live, etc) to market, monetize and make a meaningful (and profitable) difference online. But I don’t think YouTube is for everyone.
Here’s my quick assessment that I think every online entrepreneur should take when considering if YouTube is the best path to building a profitable business or a just a time suck.
Should you use YouTube for your business?
You want to show up high in Google results
You want to reach people on mobile and laptop
You want to reach a fairly tech-savvy audience of all ages
You want to build trust with your audience and be known as an expert in your area
You’re willing to make YouTube part of your weekly content marketing strategy
You want to learn how to leverage YouTube as a part of an online business plan
Your ideal customers hang out in Youtube or like videos as a communication tool
You run a big corporation
You don’t want to be a personal brand
You don’t want to be a spokesperson
You don’t want to manage a new platform
You want to be a quick, overnight success
You don’t want to put in the effort to growing a community
You think views directly equal dollar signs (they can, but that’s not the whole picture)
Your audience doesn’t use Google and/or YouTube
So you see, YouTube is not for everyone. But I can speak for myself that this one platform has changed my life and business. I love teaching people how to crack the code and put in the work and employ strategies to get started and profitable through online video marketing. It is hard and rewarding work. My ideal clients live on YouTube. They are also pretty active on Facebook. So guess where I spend my time? You guessed it. I go where my tribe hangs out. Do your market research. Find out where your people are congregating. Go there and claim your corner of the market. Hang out there long enough and people will find you and bring others to your virtual home base.
What do you think? Have you spent hours dividing your time on so many social media platforms that have you haven’t made traction on any of them?
Take this assessment and decide today if YouTube is the platform for you. Then choose one social media platform by figuring out where your ideal clients hang out. Go there and position yourself as the solution to their problems. If you decide YouTube will be your virtual home base, you need a blueprint to get you started on the right path. If you are ready to be seen, ready to add value to others and want to market and monetize your expertise, I’ve created a growing community on Facebook to help you be seen, add value and build a profitable business.
